Two different sites had matches take place last night as rain in the forecast caused the 8:00 matches to be moved to West Ottawa Tennis Club while the 6:00 matches were able to finish at Barrhaven as the 1st round continued.
Match of the evening took place at West Ottawa between Weiyi Lu and Phong Co. The 1st set took an hour as 7 of the first 9 games went to multiple deuces with both players pushing each other side to side and many times coming up to the net. Down 5-3 in the first set, Phong managed to break Weiyi’s serve to close the gap to 5-4. This was the turning point of the match as Weiyi found another level, breaking Phong to take the first set 6-4. From there, Weiyi managed to come up winning the crucial points in each following game and would not look back. A very entertaining match which finished just ten minutes before West Ottawa would close for the evening with Weiyi advancing with a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
In other notable matches, Li Yu grinded out a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wayne Cai which saw some fantastic drop shots and baseline play from both individuals.
In addition, the only seed in action last night, #13 Alex Sintu moved onto the 2nd round with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Petrica Martinas.
